Genealogical research in Belarus

Belarusian archives: Minsk, Grodno and research access

Identify the right historical archive, check its holdings and establish whether the proposed research can currently be carried out.

01 ยท Belarus research

Choose a repository from the historical locality

The historical archives in Minsk and Grodno are separate institutions. Begin with the locality, its district in the relevant period and the institution that created the record. A broad national surname enquiry leaves these questions unanswered.

Grodno's published fonds description outlines collections linked to the former Grodno governorate and parts of the former Vilna governorate. Check its actual coverage against your village and event year.

Read current notices before requesting work

As checked on 17 October 2026, Grodno's official service page states that registration of genealogical enquiries from private individuals is suspended. The Minsk archive's notice refers separately to biographical enquiries and restrictions affecting some holdings.

These notices concern specific services and material. Ask which route, if any, is available for your question. Do not turn a general holdings description into a promise of an archive visit, a search or a delivery date.

Make a useful plan even when a route is limited

Collect catalogue references, existing document images and earlier archive replies. Separate a known but inaccessible file from a collection that has not yet been identified. Those situations call for different next steps.

Review whether a duplicate, a related family event or a collection in another repository could answer the same question. Record what can be researched now, what depends on access and what would justify returning to the problem later.

What to prepare for this search

  • Village, historical district, community and event period.
  • The precise fact or family relationship to establish.
  • Fonds, inventories or earlier archive replies.
  • Current confirmation of the service and material available.

Keep a note of what each document says and which details still need checking. The research checklist can help you assemble the starting information.
