Genealogical research in Lithuania

Lithuanian archives: LVIA, LCVA and family research

Choose the appropriate Lithuanian archive and follow its finding aids from an institution to a file worth examining.

Separate the research questions

A question about a parish event and a question about an interwar administrative file require different collection searches. Define the event, person and period before choosing an archive.

The historical archive's own history describes its early collections and later transfers. Use that context together with a current catalogue, rather than assuming that every source about a Lithuanian ancestor is held in one place.

Compare historical and central archive holdings

LVIA publishes fonds and digitisation information that can guide work with historical and parish material. The Lithuanian Central State Archives describes holdings from interwar state and local institutions, diplomatic missions and later administrations.

Check the relevant institution's dates and geographical remit. A broad collection description may identify the right office while still requiring an inventory or file-level search before a particular person can be located.

Prepare an enquiry with archive references

Give the archive a locality, event range and the precise relationship or fact you want to establish. Include a fond and inventory reference if one is known. Separate a holdings question from a request for copies of an already identified entry.

Record the repository's current instructions for consulting or ordering material. Preserve both successful results and replies about gaps or unavailable files. Your research plan should identify which question the proposed file could answer and what alternative might help if it cannot.

What to prepare for this search

  • Person, locality and a focused question.
  • The period and likely record-creating institution.
  • Fond, inventory, file and existing catalogue links.
  • The searches already performed and the remaining gap.

Keep a note of what each document says and which details still need checking. The research checklist can help you assemble the starting information.
